Global Week of Action 2014: I want all children to Survive 5!
Five years should not be a child’s lifetime. In most homes and families around the world, the birth of a child is a moment of joy, a time of hope and celebration that is relived every birthday. A child’s fifth birthday, in particular, is a milestone. But it’s a milestone that every year, more than 6.6 million children do not live to see. 2 million will die on the day they are born. 4 million won’t make it to their first birthday. It does not have to be this way.
The Global Week of Action running the 1-8 May 2014 is an urgent call for action before the 2015 deadline for the Millennium Development Goals is missed and millions more lives are lost needlessly. We will also celebrate the success that has been achieved in reducing the deaths of children under the age of five. Over the past 20 years, the number of children dying has nearly halved. But more still needs to be done.
